Crafting a healthy, happy family life... one step at a time

What’s Most Important

It is easy to get bogged down with work when you are a working mum. Easy to get into that routine of drop them off at the carer then run off and do the work thing all day, then come home exhausted, make dinner, go to bed and do it all again the next day.

A little while ago I realised that if things kept on going that way that I was going to end up a bitter and twisted old lady because I had missed out on what was most important to me right now.

I wanted to be able to spend time with the boys while they were little, to be a part of their lives at school and to have the energy to be there to play with them and give them loving attention when they needed it.

I haven’t been able to do any of that for the past 18 months.

In 10 years when they are teenagers I wanted to be able to look back on happy times rather than all the nice things we had accumulated because we had the extra money to do that as I was working.

So I recently made the big decision to take a step back and reduce my hours, taking on a more family, friendly and flexible job.

I feel like a big weight has been lifted off my shoulders and that I can really focus on giving some time back to them – and recouping my energy!

It is amazing how having some clarity in your head space can change your perspective on so many things. I feel more relaxed already. I feel like I can focus on trying to get healthy again. I am actually stopping to eat lunch  rather than running around like a chicken with it’s head cut off all the time.

My new mantra is “I will not let myself become overwhelmed”.
