We are not one of those families who have to manage to many challenges when it comes to food.

In fact the biggest challenge is getting  the three year old to eat something other than his definition of a snack. That would be biscuits or museli bars or anything from the snack box in the pantry. My 3 year old will walk up to strangers and ask for a snack. It is highly cringe inducing as a parent because a) you don’t want people to think that you don’t feed him and b) the longing look in his little eyes when he sees someone eating and he is not is just heartbreaking. I think he may have been a Labrador in a past life. He is highly food driven!

We are not  vegan or vegetarian, not dairy free, egg free, nut free or gluten free. However, I am conscious of the need to be smart consumers when it comes to food products.  Simply because we have family members with food sensitivities.

So many of the foods that are available to us in the stores are more of a food product than a whole food. The food products that are marketed to us by the ‘giants’ of the supermarket world have been processed and changed so much that I am not sure we can still safely call them foods. Have a look at the ingredients list on the back of a packet next time you purchase something from the supermarket and you will see what I mean. How many of those ingredients do you actually recognise as something that you could visualise?

Over the years I have become familiar with cooking palateble foods that are gluten free, egg free, dairy free, low sugar…you name it! We don’t eat this way everyday though but I do feel the need to be conscious of the ingredients that go into the food we are preparing at home – especially when it is to be shared with others.

It is so nice to be able to take a cake along to a morning tea and have the majority of people in the room able to enjoy a piece. It is for this reason that I always make gluten free cakes when I am making birthday cakes…as we have a very special first birthday coming up this week – I will do a post on Gluten Free Birthday cakes later in the week.
