Recently I decided to torture challenge myself by signing up for the annual Fitz’s Challenge bike ride in Canberra. This event is not a race – it is a challenge – meaning that you are only doing it because you want to challenge yourself to something…well..challenging.

I signed up for the 50km – and while in some peoples books that is not very far – for me – who does very little riding – it was far enough. Especially when you consider that the course is basically all up the side of a mountain range. There is also a 105km, a 165km and a 225km event.

So one Sunday a couple of weeks ago I took myself up to Mt Stromlo for the start.

Start Fitz's 2012

It was a nice cool morning – luckily – as I would see myself out on the road for close to three hours by the end.

Tony Abbott was there too!

Given that I had very little ‘trainin’ for this one – I thought that I did rather well just to finish. It truly was grulleing and I was desperate for food by the time I got to the halfway checkpoint.

The worst part about riding up and down mountainsides to get to the check point was knowing that I had to ride back again..but giving that I was in the middle of nowhere – I kind of didn’t have a choice.

I don’t have a picture of the finish – or of any of the stupidly steep hills – mainly because I was too exhausted to take any!

Maybe next year….
